- What are "Web Safe Colors"?
- The Internet was started in the days when computers were only able to use 256 colors. What was needed was a set of colors that could be reproduced without "dithering".
- This set of 216 colors is called the "Web Safe Colors".
- "Dithering" is the the name given to the technique of adding noise (randomly selected pixels) at the point where two colors border each other. This is much like smearing the edges in a watercolor painting with a wet finger.
- It is NOT true to say that browsers can only produce 216 colors - your uploaded faily photos look pretty good..
- It IS true to say that browsers can only produce 216 colors without dithering - the process of mixing the colors and adding noise.
- Why should I care about Web Safe Colors?
- For the most part it is not a problem except when you want to reproduce very sharp text or an image with a pixel accurate edge. Dithering will blur these edges.
- This can be avoided by making sure that the background and the text colors are both web safe. This will prevent dithering.
- How do I know if I have a problem?
- If an image of yours appears blurred on our website you most likely have a dithering problem.
- You can confirm this by saving the image off the web page to your desktop and comparing it to the original. If you find they are identical then you should check your colors.
- NOTE: The staff and advertising software at ConnectPress do not have the tools, ability or inclination to alter your image without your request.
